The armed services have long been a key component of the city’s success since its earliest days, when U.S. Army personnel established Fort Roots more than a century ago. Today, thousands of active and reserve troops are stationed in the area, and thousands more military retirees call North Little Rock home.
The Little Rock Air Force Base is home to more than 11,400 military personnel, including the base’s host unit, the 314th Airlift Wing, the 19th Airlift Wing and the Arkansas Air National Guard’s 189th Airlift Wing. The Arkansas Army National Guard operates out of Camp Robinson founded 91 years ago as Camp Pike. Fort Roots is now a Veteran’s Administration hospital, providing both primary and long-term rehabilitative care.
